Color
Color at Channel House is treated as a language rather than a finish. Each glaze is developed in-house, informed by color theory, material behavior, and the way pigment shifts under heat, light, and use. We work in small variations—layering, thinning, and repeating tests—to allow color to hold depth, movement, and subtle irregularity.
Our colorways emerge from the world around the studio: tidal flats, weathered structures, horizon lines, and the muted intensity of nature meeting city.
Rather than fixed formulas, we think in families of color—related tones that move together—creating surfaces that feel lived-in, atmospheric, and quietly expressive.
Glazes
All glazes are created from scratch in house and the initial batch is tested at a federally approved lab, ensuring the formulas are non-toxic and safe for dinnerware. We then ensure proper glaze and clay body fit from each kiln load, as well as acid and alkaline testing.
Commercial glazes can have multiple issues— variances, substitutions and non-published ingredients means we can’t reliably assume that it’s safe just because it’s made by the big guys.
As you can probably tell, we take the chemistry of our ceramics seriously, so much so that we follow the guidelines for FDA restaurant approval, ensuring if you choose our dinnerware you can rest easy that it’s safe for its entire life.
We encourage you to test your dinnerware, ours and all others, at home as well. A simple search will give you multiple ways to do this on your own.
